When it comes to claiming expenses for international conferences, here’s what you need to consider as an Australian medical or legal professional:

     • Meals and accommodation costs: Only if your trip involves an overnight stay.
     • Travel insurance premiums can be claimed as a deduction if they are directly related to your work activities.
     • You can claim the portion of the premium that specifically covers your business travel.

Remember to keep detailed records of your expenses and ensure they are directly related to your professional activities. If you meet these criteria, you can claim these expenses as deductions on your tax return. Always consult with a tax professional or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for personalized advice based on your specific situation. 

It is good practice to always take up travel insurance when travelling to another country.

NextGen CPD strongly advises you to take out a travel insurance policy which provides adequate cover in the event that you have to cancel your booking, and in the event that your booking has to be cancelled or changed as a result of unforeseen circumstances and force majeure.

In the case of bookings for extracurricular activities such as ski lessons, snowmobiling etc. it is your responsibility to ensure that your travel insurance policy provides adequate cover for the activity you will engage in.

We recommend you take up the insurance cover as soon as you book.

If you choose to travel without adequate insurance cover, neither NextGen CPD nor any of our providers will be liable to you for any losses howsoever arising.
